Diabetes Treatment at Sevenoaks Podiatry

Diabetes Mellitus (DM), commonly referred to as diabetes, is a group of metabolic disorders in which there are high blood sugar levels over a prolonged period. Symptoms of high blood sugar levels include frequent urination, increased thirst and increased hunger. If left untreated diabetes can cause many complications.

Uncontrolled diabetes can damage your nerves. If you have damaged nerves in your legs and feet, you might not feel heat, cold, or pain. This lack of feeling is called “sensory diabetic neuropathy”. Foot ulcers can occur because of nerve damage and peripheral vascular defects.

Preventing Foot Problems

  • Wearing shoes that fit well
  • Avoiding walking barefoot
  • Keeping feet clean
  • Checking your feet for signs of damage to the skin on a daily basis
  • Regularly moisturising feet

Regular diabetic foot checkups are advised.
